Rochester General's Volunteer Services began during World War I and continued after the war. In the early 1920's, under the leadership of Marion Bradley Baker, the group of loosely knit volunteers was forged into an organization that gained national recognition. The Volunteer Aide Service, or "Rochester Plan," became a model for other hospital volunteer organizations throughout the country.
During this period the Hospital initiated many other pioneering activities which included an early dietary school, the third medical records school in the country, and a laboratory technology School. Milton Bohrod, M.D. and Jack Beiter organized the first Medical Photography School in the country in 1943.
