Rochester Regional Health Archives

The Rochester Regional Health Archives (the Archives) serves as the institutional memory of Rochester Regional Health, collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of the hospitals, schools of nursing, and affiliates that comprise the system.

Located at the Rochester Academy of Medicine (1441 East Avenue), the Archives was founded in 1947 as part of Rochester General Hospital’s Centennial celebrations and focused on the history of RGH. As Rochester Regional Health developed through the 1990s and early 2000s, the Archives also grew and adapted, expanding our collecting and preservation to reflect the system as a whole.

Rochester City Hospital

Rochesters Early Hospitals

This article will introduce the city’s earliest hospitals. It is my hope that by remembering these institutions in this forum, we continue to honor the past service of the individuals who served the people of Rochester, in these hospitals, as well as the present generation who continued to serve this community

Nurses Standing Outside

The Nurse Practice Act

The New York State Nurses Association (Eva Allerton and Sylveen Nye). The purpose of the organization was to secure legislation that would allow a legal credentialing mechanism for nursing practice and thus protect graduate nurses.

Where Had All The Nurses Gone

When the Spanish Influenza epidemic invaded Rochester in the fall of 1918, the community was paralyzed. Military demands of World War I had steadily drained the area of trained nurses.

The Genesee Hospital Archives

The Genesee Hospital Archives was formed in 1989 to preserve the history of the hospital and provide access to that history. Through various state and local grants including a major one from The New York State Archives Documentary Heritage Program in 1995-96, we have been able to organize and preserve the hospital’s history.
