Hospice Care volunteers fill the gap between loved ones and professional caregivers, providing comfort when friends and family can’t. From being present and talking, to sitting with patients in silent support, volunteers provide a unique kind of care to patients and their loved ones in some of their greatest moments of need.

Ways You Can Volunteer
There are many ways to share your time and talents to help support patients and families who are dealing with end of life, including:
Spending Time With Patients
- Visiting patients at home or at the nursing home, in the hospital, or at our Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center
- Reading to patients, listening to music, or helping them write letters
Providing Family Support
- Relieving a family caregiver for a short break
- Making home visits and phone calls to grieving families and friends
Helping With Daily Tasks
- Assisting with chores like grocery shopping and meal preparation
- Delivering medication and medical supplies to patients’ homes
Providing Office Support For Our Staff
- Helping with mailings, data entry, and other administrative tasks
- Assisting with clerical tasks at our Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center
Specialized Volunteer Opportunities
We also encourage our volunteers to keep their own experiences, passions, and interests in mind when volunteering. Creating connections from a shared understanding can have an immense impact on the lives of both our patients and their families.
Pet Therapy Visits
From reduced anxiety and loneliness, to improving cardiovascular health and relaxation, you and your pets can provide a wealth of physical, social, and emotional benefits to hospice patients through supportive visits. All pets must:
- Be a certified therapy animal
- Have an up-to-date shot record
- Have a Therapy Dogs International (TDI) or Pet Partner Certification
Veterans Visiting Veterans
For some, serving their country is a way of life — and giving back to a veteran in their moment of need is a way to offer continued support and understanding through shared military experiences.
CompassionNet Program
When a child is facing a potentially life threatening condition, little else matters— both the child and their family need comfort and support as they navigate through diagnosis and treatment. As a CompassionNet volunteer, spending time with the children and their families can make an immense difference in their lives.
Getting Started as a Hospice Care Volunteer
As a hospice care volunteer, you can commit to as little or as much time as you wish. Some individuals volunteer for several hours each week, while others commit to a few hours each month. Regardless of how many days or hours you have available, every moment matters, and can make a significant impact on the lives of patients and their loved ones.
