New Labor & Delivery Unit Opens at Rochester General Hospital

August 11, 2022|3 min. read

Babies who are born at Rochester General Hospital will come into the world in a newly-constructed, state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit.

Located directly across the hall from the former Twig Birthing Center, and just steps away from our postpartum care unit at the Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care, the new birthing center provides comfort and serenity for women as they go through their birthing experience, while also making higher-level technologies available for women with medically-complex births.

An innovative space

Starting August 10, all new mothers arriving at Rochester General Hospital will deliver their babies in the new Labor & Delivery unit.

Featuring 20 new patient rooms and two on-unit operating rooms, the new space combines triage rooms for providers to assess women and their medical needs when they initially arrive with separate rooms to care for women in active labor and delivery.

Three pre-operative and post-operative recovery rooms are available for women and their babies, as well.

Each Labor and Delivery room is equipped with a shower or combination bathtub & shower designed with the comfort of delivering mothers in mind.

Advanced telemetry equipment is also on hand in each room to better monitor women with more complex medical needs.

Multiple nursing stations and provider stations are set up to allow for ease of access to patients throughout the unit, as well.

Understanding your needs

Nearly a decade in the making, the new Twig Birthing Center strives to build a foundation for the families of the future.

“This is an investment in parents, in their families, and in our community,” said Elizabeth Bostock, MD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rochester General Hospital. “Opening Rochester Regional Health’s new Labor & Delivery unit serves as validation that we see each person, we understand their needs, and we are moving to meet them where they are.”

“Having a baby is a very special time in people’s lives,” said Amy Craib, interim president of Rochester General Hospital. “Being in such a beautiful modern space means families can experience this life-changing moment in a comfortable environment with access to the most modern technology and have the space they need to be a family while this is happening.”

The former Twig Birthing Center space will be repurposed at a future date.
