Caring for Your Ears, Nose, and Throat

Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. They are commonly referred to as ENT physicians.

At Rochester Regional Health, our ENT specialists diagnose and manage diseases of the sinuses, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, and upper pharynx (mouth and throat), as well as structures of the neck and face. Otolaryngologists diagnose, treat and manage specialty-specific disorders as well as many primary problems in both children and adults.

When to Visit an ENT Specialist

Certain symptoms and conditions should result in an immediate appointment with an otolaryngologist: chronic sinus infections, ear infections, and a case of laryngitis lasting more than six weeks.

Chronic sinus infections can lead to excess pressure and pain in the head and face and can occur frequently. An ENT will treat your sinuses and provide you with methods to prevent future infections from occurring.

If you have a case of laryngitis that has lasted more than six weeks, it may have been caused by more than a common cold. Similarly, an ENT specialist should assess ear infection symptoms that have lasted more than a few days to determine your exact diagnosis and the best course of treatment for your needs.
