David Little was born in Cherry Valley, New York, on February 9, 1834. He was educated at the local Academy and at Union College in Schenectady, where he graduated in 1855. He received his M. D. degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, in 1857 and interned at Bellevue Hospital, New York City. Little began his medical practice in Rochester two years later.
Dr. Little was among the first to volunteer in May 1861 to put down the Southern insurrection. He was mustered in as Surgeon of the 13th New York Volunteers. Unlike many of the surgeons of his day he served throughout is two years with his regiment. Dr. Little took part in all major campaigns and actions with that organization. He was mustered out on May 3, 1863.
Dr. Little returned to his medical practice in Rochester. He was appointed visiting physician to the staff of the city Hospital in October 1866. From 1886 -- 1896 he served as the president of the Medical Staff. He was one of the founders and officers of the Pathological Society in the 1880's.
In 1863 he was married to Catherine A. Livingston. They had four children Alice, Dr. Seely W., Beekman C. and Frank Little. After a long and full life Dr. David Little died following a short illness March 1, 1912.
