TGH School of Nursing

The School of Nursing was established in 1889 and incorporated in 1891 as the Rochester Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing. In 1926 the present name of The Genesee Hospital School of Nursing was adopted.

The School of Nursing has offered a three-year full accredited nursing education program granting a diploma in nursing and qualifying graduates for eligibility to take the New York State Registered Professional Nursing Licensing Examination.

An affiliation with Monroe Community College for the teaching of basic biological, physical, social sciences and English was initiated in 1962. In 1972, the Monroe Community College initiated a procedure in which students of the School of Nursing may, within the three year period of the Nursing program, become eligible for the award of Associate in Science Degree in Liberal Arts from the college.

The school facilities, the Hollister Educational Building was opened in 1931.

The clinical facilities include the priority use of the Genesee Hospital's clinical facilities. In 1963, the current affiliation with the Rochester Psychiatric Center expanded the educational facilities of the School of Nursing in Psychiatric Nursing.

The Student Services of the school include a student nurses' residence, a counseling service, a health program, Health Science Library, and a student government association. Eastman Hall, the residence, was completed in 1911 and enlarged in 1931.

The School of Nursing is an integral part of the Genesee Hospital. The legal authority for the school and its educational program is vested in the Genesee Hospital School of Nursing, Inc. Two corporations: The Genesee Hospital and The Genesee Hospital School of Nursing, Inc. govern the operation of the School of Nursing.

The School of Nursing graduated its last senior class in May 1978.

The Rochester Medical Museum and Archives have joined together with other local historical organizations to make available images from our collections. The New York Heritage site is a portal that provides you with a digital glimpse of some of the rare cultural offerings from among the millions of images and documents preserved in the area's archives. Currently, the NY Heritage database includes almost 10,000 materials from our many participating local contributors.
