Born in Dutchess County N.Y. on May 8, 1825, Dr. Hurd’s father was a physician and a surgeon during the war of 1812. After attending school in Dutchess and Onondaga counties, Edmund went to study medicine with his brother and Dr. M.L. Lee in Fulton, N.Y. and eventually graduated from Geneva University in 1847.
After practicing medicine for two years in Caledonia, N.Y, Dr. Hurd came to Rochester and set up his practice and rapidly established himself as an excellent and respected physician.
Dr. Hurd’s respected voice in the debate over the creation of a homeopathic hospital in Rochester influenced the founding of the Rochester Homeopathic Hospital in 1887. With the hospital’s opening in 1889, Dr. Hurd became a member of the Visiting Staff and was elected as the first Secretary of the Medical Staff in 1889.
Dr. Hurd was Vice President of the New York State Homeopathic Society and the American Institute of Homeopathy. At the time of his death on May 15, 1891 of cancer, Dr. Hurd was the oldest homeopathic physician in Monroe County.
