On January 28, 1864 Rochester City Hospital was opened for inspection. One physician, one surgeon, a resident physician, a superintendent and his wife, a cook and a laundress staffed it. Nursing staff from the community was hired on a week to week basis. The first patient, Maggie O'Brien, was admitted February 5 for the treatment of a tapeworm.
