What is Mitral Regurgitation (MR)?

MR is a condition where the mitral valve on the left side of the heart doesn’t close properly, allowing blood to leak backward from the lower chamber (ventricle) into the upper chamber (atrium). This makes it difficult for your heart to pump enough blood throughout your body.

Causes and risk factors include congenital heart defects, prior heart infections, certain cancers, chest injury, irregular heartbeat, suffering a heart attack, among others that a physician can use to help diagnose.

MR is the most common type of heart valve disease, and can make you feel tired or short of breath, and can lead to heart failure if left untreated.

What are the Symptoms of Mitral Regurgitation?

It is very important to discuss any symptoms of MR with your physician.

Symptoms usually depend on the severity of mitral regurgitation, which ranges from mild to moderate to severe. They include:

  • Fatigue, tiredness, decreased energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent cough when lying down
  • Feelings of a rapid, pounding, or fluttering heartbeat
  • Swelling in the feet, ankles, and/or lungs
  • Weight change or a decrease in appetite

Are you experiencing any of the above symptoms and believe it may be due to MR?

What are the Treatments and Procedures for Mitral Regurgitation?

There are several treatments and procedures available for MR:

  • Medical Therapy
  • Mitral Valve Surgery
  • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR)

Most valve conditions can?t be treated with medication alone. Once a heart valve condition begins to affect the heart?s ability to pump blood, it's likely to require surgical repair or replacement. Rochester Regional Health offers cutting-edge transcatheter valve interventions as promising alternatives for patients with severe MR: The treatment options below may be available to candidates who fit certain criteria.

MitraClip (Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair, or TMVR)

Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (also called MitraClip) is a minimally invasive procedure that reshapes and repairs the mitral valve (heart valve) through a tube with a clip attached that reduces mitral regurgitation.

MitraClip helps normal blood flow to occur. It is an option for patients with heart failure, or those who are not ideal candidates for mitral valve surgery because of age, heart failure, physical condition, prior cardiac surgery, or other factors.
