About the Emergency Department at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital

The Emergency Department (ED) offers state-of-the-art technology in a modern setting designed to provide comfort to patients and families when they need it most. What hasn’t changed is our highly experienced team of board-certified physicians and specially-trained mid-levels, nurses and support staff, whose delivery of emergency services leads the way in speed, efficiency, and patient satisfaction. The ED team collaborates with multiple specialists and sub-specialists both at NWCH and at Rochester General Hospital and has an expertise in rapid assessment and treatment of stroke cerebrovascular accident (CVA), providing its patients better treatment and outcomes.

Our team

All NWCH Emergency Medicine physicians are board-certified and work with a highly trained staff of midlevel providers, nurses and patient care technicians. Learn more about the roles of the healthcare providers in the ED below.

Doctors

All of our doctors are experienced board-certified physicians who are dedicated to providing high-quality care. Doctors are responsible for diagnosing and treating any emergency medical conditions you may have. They can also answer questions about your diagnosis and treatment. They can be identified by the letters MD or DO after their name.

Mid-level Providers

The Emergency Department uses Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) during busy times to more rapidly see our less acute (sick) patients. Each NP or PA is under the supervision of the attending emergency physician.  NP and PAs can be identified by NP or PA-C after their names.

Nurses

Our nurses are responsible for ensuring that patients receive the care that has been ordered by our doctors. They do many things including drawing blood, starting IVs, giving medications, ensuring patient safety and reviewing discharge instructions. They can answer questions about your ER care plan. Each nurse can be identified by the letters RN after their name.

Patient Care Technicians

Our patient care techs function in multiple roles to ensure your comfort in the ER. They help patients undress and mobilize around the department and will conduct basic testing including taking your blood pressure, temperature and pulse. They may place you on a cardiac monitor and take an electrocardiogram. They can be identified by the letters TECH after their names.
